Warlord Games Introduces New Addition to Hail Caesar Series: The Punic Wars https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/warlord-games-introduces-new-addition-to-hail-caesar-series-the-punic-wars/ https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/warlord-games-introduces-new-addition-to-hail-caesar-series-the-punic-wars/#respond Mon, 22 Apr 2024 20:48:03 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=16258 Warlord Games has announced the next installment in its Epic Battles series, titled Hail Caesar Epic Battles: The Punic Wars. The game covers the historical conflicts between the Roman Republic and Carthage, including the use of war elephants, from 264 to 146 BC.

Revealed at the Salute convention and highlighted across various social media platforms, the game adaptation maintains the foundational gameplay of Rick Priestley’s original Hail Caesar but adjusted to a smaller scale. This adjustment facilitates the use of larger armies on the tabletop, enhancing the visual and tactical experience.

The new game features simplified assembly and painting processes, particularly with the newly designed Roman infantry blocks that are easier to handle and detailed, enabling quick setup without sacrificing visual quality. The Hannibal battle set, a comprehensive package within this release, includes extensive forces for both historical factions, a rulebook, and an additional game titled Scipio that focuses on the Roman tactical system known as ‘manipular’ tactics.

On the Carthaginian side, the game features diverse units like Libyan infantry, Gallic Celts, and Numidian cavalry. The elephants, significant to Carthaginian military tactics, are highlighted as multi-part models providing customization and scale appropriate for epic battles.

Pre-orders for the game are set to begin in May, as Warlord Games aims to expand its offering in the historical tabletop gaming market. Further details on the game, including miniature breakdowns and painting tips, are expected to be shared leading up to the release date.

Achtung Panzer! Introduces Players to Tank Warfare https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/achtung-panzer-introduces-players-to-tank-warfare/ https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/achtung-panzer-introduces-players-to-tank-warfare/#respond Wed, 20 Mar 2024 21:44:14 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=15597 In a detailed Q&A session, game designers Mike Bradford and Roger Gerrish recently provided insights into their latest creation, Achtung Panzer!, a tabletop game centered around World War II tank battles. The session was aimed at addressing queries from the gaming community.

The designers shared that the duration of a standard game ranges from one to two hours, varying based on players’ familiarity with the game mechanics. To streamline gameplay while maintaining an element of historical accuracy, certain features, such as tank-specific smoke screens, have been standardized across all tanks, although the game does include specific characteristics to differentiate between tank models.

Players interested in building their forces were advised that starting with two to three tanks per side is sufficient. The game incorporates asset cards for additional battlefield elements, eliminating the need for a large initial investment in miniatures. Achtung Panzer! supports a variable number of tanks per side, recommending two to six for an optimal experience, but the game can accommodate larger battles.

Regarding scalability, the game is designed to function well in both small and large-scale engagements. Rules are adaptable to different miniature scales, allowing players to use various sizes of models without significant adjustments.

The game stands out for its attention to detail and depth of gameplay compared to other tank-on-tank games. It offers an extensive campaign system where tank crews gain experience and improve over time, enhancing the game’s replayability and depth.

Ammo management is an aspect of gameplay, with standard ammunition types being unlimited but special ammunition being restricted based on historical availability. This introduces strategic choices about when and how to deploy scarce resources.

The game does not simulate tank ramming due to its focus on shooting mechanics, ensuring a streamlined experience. However, a campaign system is included, allowing for crew progression and tank upgrades, further enriching the gameplay.

Looking ahead, the designers expressed interest in expanding the game to include other theaters of war and additional tank types, such as amphibious models. The possibility of incorporating air support into the game was also mentioned, suggesting future expansions could add new dimensions to the gameplay.

Achtung Panzer! is set to launch on April 13, 2024, with a starter set that includes detailed tank models, scenery, and everything needed to begin playing.

Warlord Games Releases ‘Sepoy General’ Wellesley Miniature as December’s Soldier of Fortune https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/warlord-games-releases-sepoy-general-wellesley-miniature-as-decembers-soldier-of-fortune/ https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/warlord-games-releases-sepoy-general-wellesley-miniature-as-decembers-soldier-of-fortune/#respond Wed, 29 Nov 2023 21:19:45 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=14169 Warlord Games has unveiled its latest Soldier of Fortune figure: ‘Old Nosey’, Sir Arthur Wellesley, known for his role in the Battle of Assaye and later as the Duke of Wellington. This exclusive release follows last month’s miniature of Emperor Napoleon, Wellesley’s most famous adversary.

A Tribute to a Lesser-Known Chapter

The December Soldier of Fortune miniature portrays Wellesley during his time in India, specifically at the Battle of Assaye in September 1803. This battle marked Wellesley’s first major victory, which he would later describe as his finest accomplishment, surpassing even his success at Waterloo.

Historical Significance and Expert Craftsmanship

The term ‘sepoy general’, used by Napoleon to mockingly refer to Wellesley, highlights his time in India commanding sepoys, professional Indian infantrymen. The miniature captures Wellesley astride his horse, Diomed, in a Major-General’s uniform, complete with a sunhat for the Indian climate. The figure was brought to life by Design Studio Painter Kirsten Williams, showcasing exceptional skill and attention to detail.

Versatility for Gamers and Collectors

The figure is not only a valuable addition for historical enthusiasts focusing on the British in India during the Black Powder era but also serves as an excellent stand-in for less famous commanders of the period. Additionally, it can be used as a generic spymaster or intelligence officer in the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic Wars.

Limited Availability

Wellesley’s figure is part of Warlord Games’ unique initiative where each month, a special figure is made available exclusively through their webstore. These figures are available for one month only, after which they become unavailable for a minimum of two years. Wellesley’s miniature, only available during December 2023, is part of a sequential collection, offering collectors a chance to own a piece of meticulously crafted historical representation.

New Bolt Action Plastic French Infantry Set Unveiled https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/new-bolt-action-plastic-french-infantry-set-unveiled/ https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/new-bolt-action-plastic-french-infantry-set-unveiled/#respond Wed, 20 Sep 2023 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=14035 Warlord Games has finally let the cat out of the bag—or should we say, le chat? Bolt Action fans can now rejoice as Warlord has just announced the addition of early-war French Army plastic infantry to their range. Dubbed by the creators as “arguably our most versatile sprue yet,” the set offers a robust variety of options for tabletop gamers looking to expand their collections.

A Wealth of Customization

The sprue features six dynamic poses for soldiers adorned in the iconic French Army greatcoat. For those concerned about in-game aesthetics, the French soldiers can be easily identified by these unique coats, even when placed alongside other ‘greatcoat’ armies. The sprue also comes with a variety of gear including 1935-pattern haversacks, holstered pistols, and other tools essential for getting comfortable along the Maginot line.

Arms for La Patrie

When it comes to armament, the new sprue doesn’t disappoint. Players can choose from the modern MAS 36 rifle or go retro with the Mle1907/15 Berthier rifle. Additionally, the set introduces the plastic version of the iconic VB Launcher and the highly efficient FM 24/29 ‘Châtellerault’ light machine gun, ensuring that your troops are never under-armed.

The Hat is Where it’s At

The headgear options are arguably what sets this sprue apart. From the iconic ‘Adrian’ helmets to the large berets for ‘Fortress Infantry,’ the options are numerous. There are even ‘bonnets de police’ for the French chasseur light infantry regiments, offering a range of stylish and functional headgear choices for players.

Diverse Troop Types

The new range also celebrates the often underrepresented colonial troops, with headgear perfect for North African soldiers. Now, players can field a variety of colonial troops, adding depth and variety to the French army.

Options to Order

Warlord is offering multiple ways for fans to get their hands on these new miniatures. The French Starter Army Boxed Set contains a whopping 36 new figures, medium mortar, medium machine gun, and a 25mm anti-tank gun for firepower. It even includes the Char B1 bis medium tank for armoured support.

If you want the full experience, the French Army All-in Bundle provides all this along with cavalry, artillery transports, and light tanks.

For those only interested in the infantry, the French Army Infantry Bundle will be available later this year, offering three new boxes of infantry along with a Somua S35 light tank and a Lorraine 38L armoured carrier.

Warlord Games Announces the Release of ‘Tough Gut’ Bolt Action Campaign Book https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/warlord-games-announces-the-release-of-tough-gut-bolt-action-campaign-book/ https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/warlord-games-announces-the-release-of-tough-gut-bolt-action-campaign-book/#respond Fri, 30 Jun 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=12738 Warlord Games announced the release of “Tough Gut,” a sequel to the Bolt Action campaign book “Soft Underbelly,” on their official website. The newly released book was authored by Robert Vella and propels the timeline into 1944, focusing on the invasion of mainland Italy.

“Tough Gut” narrates the gripping tale of the first five months of mainland Italy’s invasion in 1943/44, covering the landings and breakout from the Anzio beachhead, the Gustav Line’s fierce combat, and the legendary battles for Monte Cassino. The book is a must-have for Bolt Action tabletop enthusiasts keen on re-enacting these strategically crucial yet often overlooked battles.

The book presents a total of ten unique scenarios, from the opening skirmish “The Barracks,” to the concluding epic battle “Playing With the Big Cats.”

“Tough Gut” introduces new units and theatre selectors for both Allies and Axis. Allies can now utilize specific rules and units representing New Zealanders (including Māori), Indians, Canadians, and Poles. The Axis also gets a refresh with German forces, including seasoned veterans and raw recruits, especially the Fallschirmjäger paratroopers who played a significant role in Monte Cassino’s bitter defense.

The book also includes extra rules and revised special pieces of equipment tailored explicitly for the Italian campaign, ranging from early-model Panzerfaust 30 anti-tank weapons to flash suppressors for machine guns. Gebirgsjäger now receive the Mountain Warriors special rule, and the Forza d’Animo national special rule sees Italian forces become more aggressive on the tabletop.

A unique addition to the book is the legendary bear, Wojtek, who was adopted by Polish soldiers and served alongside them throughout the Italian campaign. Wojtek was an ammunition carrier for an artillery unit, and his presence boosted morale among the human troops. Wojtek’s special rules in Bolt Action extend a morale-boosting aura to friendly troops within his vicinity.

“Tough Gut” is available through the Warlord Games webstore and comes with the exclusive book figure, Wojtek the Bear, when ordered from there. This campaign book is expected to provide fresh and exciting content for Bolt Action fans and provide an immersive WWII gaming experience.
