That was… interesting. But yeah, as I swim neck-deep through all this work, I’m gonna listen to some gaming podcasts to help. I hope they help you get through the work week as well. This week on the dial we have:

How’s your week going so far? Mine’s… going… Stacking up to be an extremely busy end of June and into July, but waddyagonnado? At least, while I’m doing all this work, I can listen to some gaming podcasts as I go. This week on the dial we have:

Game Classy Episode 285: What are the points?

40k new edition talk, privateer press stops production, and Trek

The D6 Generation Pip 157: D&D Live – Sands of Khassan Session 3 – Warehouses & Wererats

In which we learn that were-creatures like to guard warehouses.

Lords of the Dungeon 63: Criminal Muppets, Roleplaying Mental Trauma and PC Conflict

Today Jess and Bender spin the yarn of their recent Star Wars adventures using the Blades in the Dark RPG called Criminal Muppets. Then the Lords take a question from a listener regarding roleplaying mental trauma. And finally, the game talks about healthy and unhealthy player character conflict.

Rolling Dice & Taking Names Episode 295: Saigon 75, Twilight Struggle – Red Sea, Vivarium, Vaalbara

Saigon was the capital of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. In 1975, it was captured by the North Vietnamese army and the Viet Cong, marking the end of the war and the reunification of Vietnam under communist rule. The fall of Saigon was preceded by a massive evacuation of American and South Vietnamese civilians and military personnel, who fled the city by helicopter, boat, or plane. This is the tension you are facing as you play Saigon 75. This game isn’t complex and that is the strength of this game. It honestly made me believe I was trying to hold on to hope. But while playing, all these war movies are running through my head that are about this time in history. This was such an enjoyable game but if having the throw of dice always dictating your outcome is not your thing, then might not be for you.

If you are looking for either a quick game of Twilight Struggle or not sure you would like the complexity and length of Twilight Struggle, then really consider playing Red Sea: Conflict in the Horn of Africa. It gives you that Twilight Struggle feel, but in a fraction of the time. It tastes great, but is less filling, meaning time wise. So this works for me and think that is why enjoyed it so much.

And if you need two quick filler games on set collection, Vaalbara and Vivarium can do that for you. Which one you might want to consider is dependent on which drafting mechanic you prefer. Do you want one where it is based on silent bids or one where simply pulling from a row/column based on the dominoes you have in hand. While the mechanic in Vivarium is simpler, the strategy for scoring is up there with Vaalbara.

Thanks for listening and appreciate all those that have already committed to the Strike Tournament at Gen Con.

The D6 Generation Pip 159: Author Interviews at BaltiCon 2023

Craig talks to authors from around the Baltimore/DC area about their work, their processes, their challenges and more.

Rolling Dice & Taking Names Episode 294: Are COIN games difficult to learn?

The COIN series of games from GMT Games is very popular series of games. However, the look and rules may be intimidating to gamers. I teach 3 players Cuba Libre and they are on this episode to give their thoughts on the series. How hard was it to learn? How does it compare to other games? What did they like about the game.

Big thanks to Ben Haimowitz, Ben Nicholson and Evan Miller for coming on the show!

Man… another week and I’m a day behind to begin with. I don’t know what’s up with my brain lately. Maybe I’ve been playing Where Is My Mind too much? (that honestly can’t happen, but still) Well, lemme put on some gaming podcasts for a bit instead and see what happens. This week on the dial we have:

Rolling Dice & Taking Names Episode 293: Undaunted: Stalingrad, Motor City, AH LCG Fortune & Folly, Top 5 games to rebuy

We will often rely on others to help us do reviews on games and due to hectic schedules, we bring in Marty’s dad and a friend of his from work to help make a complete show. We could have just stopped there, but we wanted to share our thoughts that after doing this show for ten years, what games would we start our collection with if we suddenly had to start over.

But due to the fact that the guy who types these up didn’t participate in the games, can’t really say much other than, see if either of the guests are a good replacement for me. Kidding as always. Not going anywhere for ten years now that we got more space on our servers.

There are two contests over on Discord so be sure to join our server if you haven’t already. You can find the invite on the homepage here.

Game Classy 284: The Old World

Anonymous Tabletop Episode 59: Mayday! We’re Going Down!

Welcome to Anonymous Tabletop Episode 59.

In this very not safe for work episode, Tim takes another sick day and we give him all sorts of crap for it, Jean takes a trip down memory lane and ends up weasing the juice, and we take an impromptu trip to the bowels of Uranus.

Then, Lathan recaps his recent titillating trip to Exxxotica, we find out that Jean is quite the authority on leather and BDSM, and Dave thinks nothing really says romance like needing to throw a tarp down first.

And finally, Shut Up and Take My Money gets kinky and builds an Empire, Geeky Jean revisits Uranus, and Celebrity Deathmatch takes a moustache ride and ends up covered in Jello.

Oh, and don’t forget about Tim’s Sack. This one will likely ruin your childhood.. Sorry..

The Secret Cabal Episode 273: Darwin’s Journey and Games That Fired Other Games

HEY OH! It’s time for some more Secret Cabal in your life. Today the gang goes bananas outta the game and gets into some games they’ve been playing including Thunder Road Vendetta, Nemesis: Lockdown, New York 1901, Dead by Daylight: The Boardgame, Galaxy Trucker and feature Simone Luciani and Nestore Mangone’s newest masterpiece, Darwin’s Journey. Then after Tony T gives us what he does best – the official tabletop gaming news, the gang digs into a discussion about games that fired other games and feature some Cabalist thoughts!

Rolling Dice & Taking Names Episode 291: Oros, Maria, Kamigami Battles, Blob Party

Volcanoes on islands are quite common and can be found in various parts of the world. Islands are often formed by volcanic activity, either as a result of tectonic plate movements or hotspots in the Earth’s mantle. But in the game Oros, you are the creator of volcanoes and land coming together. You are doing all this so your demi-god is praised and you are the extreme knowledgeable one. This game from Lucky Duck is one that will challenge you and your pals because it is deceptive in strategy, cooperation and even some take that as you battle for limited opportunity to gain the end goal of being the most knowledgeable.

We also continue our adventure into the war games with a classic, Maria. Based on recommendation by some very influential people, Marty picked up a copy off of Ebay. At first, was a bit concerned due to the length of the game, but the play was smooth and the rules easy to follow. If you are into these war style of games, you have gotten to play it well before us. If you haven’t, then you might want to seek it out.

A deck builder that requires you to actually pay attention to the cards you are getting from the market. That is what Kamigami requires due to the chaining of cards. This was refreshing to deal with and if you need another deck builder in your life, give it a test run. We did struggle at the end to get to the final end game, but that just might be due to our lack of familiarity with the card combos which you need to understand in these games.

Yesterday, my left ear was clogged all day. I spent a lot of time trying to get it clear, which mostly just ended up giving me a headache and dizziness. But, I eventually got it. Just… what is up lately? Thankfully, it’s nothing huge, but there’s been about a dozen little things going on health-wise. Anyway, now that I can hear again, let’s get into some gaming podcasts. This week on the dial we have:

Game Classy Episode 282: Warhammer Fest 2023

Pinkertons come to hassle Joe and Steve as they review Warhammer fest 2023

Rolling Dice & Taking Names Episode 290: Earth, Wingspan- Asia, Votes for Women, In the Footsteps of Darwin

Thanks to everyone who voted for us for Best Podcast over at BGG. We really appreciate the nomination but unfortunately, we didn’t win. But that is okay. A big congrats to This Game is Broken for winning this year.

Earth from Inside Up found its way to the table and understand why people are talking about it. We love our engine builder games and this didn’t disappoint. Wingspan is a favorite of mine and Donna’s, so when I purchased up Asia, was hoping that the Duet mode would help us get it to the table more often. Why? Because, already said love the engine builders.

If there is a chance for you to get a play of In the Footsteps of Darwin, do it because you might be pleasantly surprised. This is one of those games that will fly under the radar and as a filler, it doesn’t disappoint.

Finally, Votes for Women will not only educate those that play it but might even help get people to try these types of card driven map games. It is fair to assume that these games look complicated, but this is a very solid introduction to that style. Who knows, after a few plays of this game, you might convince someone to give Twilight Struggle a chance.

The D6 Generation Pip Episode 155: D&D Live – Sands of Khassan Session 1 – White Dragon Lair

In which we learn why a dragon gets so many actions.

The Secret Cabal Episode 272: Masters of the Universe and Civilization Games

Episode 272 starts out with an oldie but a goodie, Chris’ Movie review segment in which he kinda talks about the Tetris movie and trails off into something else. Then the gang gets busy with the games they’ve been playing including Yokohama, 51st State: Ultimate Edition, Core Worlds, Starship Captains, Revive and a feature review of Masters of the Universe Clash for Eternia from CMON. Then after Tony T goes ape with the best damn news segment in the third Galaxy, the Founders discuss what makes a Civilization game.
